The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation was established in September 2000, by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore and his wife Betty.
The Foundation grew rapidly from its establishment in 2000 and currently employs more than 70 people, manages over $6 billion of assets, and has an annual operating budget of approximately $20 million. The Foundation intends to pay out at least five percent of its endowment annually, which equates to an annual grant budget of approximately $300 million. Since inception, the Foundation has exceeded the federally mandated payout level by $20 million and paid over $65 million in taxes.
The Foundation’s investment objective is to protect the purchasing power of the endowment in perpetuity. As such, the investment portfolio is a collection of diversified assets designed to deliver relatively stable returns in a variety of market environments. The Foundation strives to balance the competing goals of generating a long-term return in excess of spending and inflation while providing a predictable, stable source of funds for current programs. Success in this approach will enable the Foundation to address the challenges of today and those of future generations.
