Land Protection

Overview and Goals

The Foundation seeks to protect the Bay Area’s unique and irreplaceable lands for future generations. Many individuals and organizations have worked together during the last 50 years to make the San Francisco Bay Area a model for urban areas that prosper within a mixture of protected landscapes. Our efforts are supporting and building on that work.

The Foundation makes grants for land acquisition and conservation easements. We look at the value and importance of the land to the local and regional environment, whether the project has community support, and ensure that funded projects have plans in place for appropriate long-term stewardship.

To date, the Foundation has awarded more than $90 million in land protection grants that helped to protect over 25,000 at-risk acres, an area nearly the size of the city and county of San Francisco.
